This period was suggested by Mitch Brittnacher (University of Washington), who noticed that the auroral zone has a distinct gap where very little precipitation occurs for 10-15 minutes. This gap is then filled with a strong aurora. We are interested how the ionosphere is modified by the aurora, and a gap like this will have some impact on how currents flow in the ionosphere.
These images are raw UVI images, not calibrated and not transformed into geographic coordinate systems. One image every 3 minutes (approximately) is shown to give a general overview of the auroral activity.
